TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf: Rebirth of a Legend

A Reissue of the Heuer Monaco "McQueen"

In 2018, TAG Heuer released a new, limited edition of its iconic "McQueen" Monaco - the TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 Gulf Special Edition. The new model is being issued as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Gulf racing stripes, TAG Heuer's role in motor racing, and the "King of Cool" himself, Steve McQueen. The watch is a special edition, only available in the United States.

"The King of Cool"

Back in the 1970s, Steve McQueen was the "King of Cool." He was a world-famous movie star and a prominent racecar driver. In fact, during 1970 he placed second in the 12 Hours of Sebring – a professional race – driving a Porsche 908/02. It was during this period that McQueen was offered the leading role in a racing inspired 1971 movie "Le Mans." In the role, McQueen played a race car driver. The props and wardrobe for the role were supplied by Don Nunley, the film's property master. As a part of this process, Nunley provided McQueen with a choice of watches to select from as a prop for the movie. As a part of this process, McQueen selected a blue-dialed Heuer Monaco, model 1133B. The watch was featured throughout the film, including print advertisements promoting the film. The rest is, as they say, watch history...
The TAG Heuer Monaco (originally Heuer Monaco) is a series of automatic chronograph wristwatch originally introduced by Heuer in 1969 in honor of the Monaco Grand Prix. The Monaco was revolutionary for being the first automatic as well as the first square cased chronograph. The Monaco reference 1133B was part of the legendary trio of watches that Heuer introduced in 1969 to house their new line of automatic chronographs - Monaco 1133B, Carrera 1153N and Autavia 1163MH.

Gulf Special Edition

The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf 2018 Special Edition (CAW211R) features the same iconic 39mm x 39mm square case of its predecessors. Although it is a tribute to the 1969  "McQueen Monaco," the new edition features a few slight updates, such as: A 3-part steel case, sapphire crystal, rectangular shaped pushers, slimmer lugs, and a sapphire see-through caseback.
The watch's dark blue dial features a sun-ray finish and "Gulf stripes" along the right side of the dial. The chronograph minutes subdial is at 9 o’clock while the running seconds subdial is at 3 o’clock. The combination of silver opaline square subdial and black baton hands achieves that perfect vintage look. The primary hands and hour markers are rhodium plated. The chronograph seconds hand features a red lacquered finish, which perfectly matches the racing theme of the watch. Finally, the date window can be found at 6 o’clock, just below the Gulf logo.
The new Gulf model includes the following specifications:
  • Case: 39mm x 39mm - 3-part steel case, brushed and polished - sapphire crystal on both sides - 100m water-resistant
