Making A Case For Carbon

A Watch Gang Guide On Carbon Fiber Watches

Carbon and carbon fiber is used in the aerospace and auto industry for its strength, rigidity and lightweight properties. Because of these attributes, many brands have begun to utilize these materials in their watches, including dials, accents and even entire watch models. In this article we will dip our toe into the pool of carbon-based watches and explore the material as well as some of the brands or models who have incorporated it into their designs.
A watch case is one of the key elements of a watch design and plays an important role in its durability as well as the way it wears on the wrist. The case is the most important component that can make or break its durability. Traditionally, watch cases have almost always been crafted of steel, titanium, and occasionally precious/non-precious metals, but recently there has been a growing number of brands that have been using a nontraditional material in their cases, carbon and carbon fiber. With its bold appearance, unique patterns and real-world industrial use, it is emerging as one of the biggest trends within the watch industry.
Unlike traditional cases, built with stainless steel or precious metals, carbon cases have a mottled appearance, with varying designs and shades of black due to their layered or composite construction. Depending on the manufacturer, the carbon or carbon fiber is combined with a binding agent to create an extremely hard surface. In the case of carbon fiber, the fabric sheets are layered one on top of the next, and with carbon composite cases the carbon material is mixed together with the binding material. Once each of these steps is completed, the materials are then pressed into case molds and set to dry. Once dry, the cases are then finished into the final product. There are many great examples of carbon and carbon fiber based watches in the market.
